This post is about Hispanic vegetables. I am not going to translate these into Spanish as there is really no need. If they are not readily understood you will learn them the second you get to Mexico or Latin America. Maybe in another lesson I will have drills on these veggies. Here is a little lesson on vegetable words in Spanish if you are interested.

Really all the vegetables that come from the Latin world like Tomatoes, peppers and tomatoes were not in Europe until Columbus. Many European countries consider them their own. However, it is not true, this were Native American and then Hispanic vegetables.

Types of Hispanic vegetables

Other Hispanic vegetables include:

yucca

chayhotes

squash

chiles

quelites

nopales

jicama

tender cactus

tomatillos

peas

hearts of palm

artichokes

Olives

asparagus

Jalapeno

Poblano

The Spanish world is also home of green salad, because it is sunny and easy to grow.

Artichokes are considered Hispanic vegetables

La Preferida and Goya are two large Hispanic vegetable companies also Vigos and Kuners. I would love to buy stock in Goya but it is a private company.

I have a cooking blog also and today I wrote about Mexican porgies believe it or not. I am into trying to take Spanish food and vegetables and mixing it with other cuisines. I have not gotten any complaints. I think like to try exotic things. Anything from Latin America is considered spicy and exotic in my mind.

Corn and beans as the Hispanic vegetable

I do not know if these are really vegetables or simply proteins but Corn is high in the Amino acid Arginine beans have Lysine they balance each other out and make a complete protein.

From this you can make almost anything, including pastes or main dishes.

Food from Spain in Europe

Since I’m living in Europe, and the winters are quite cold here we get most of our winter vegetables from Spain. Spain has a longer growing season than where I am and eastern Europe. In the early spring we get Spanish vegetables that are only available in the summer.

The problem and is vegetables from Spain are relatively expensive if they are exotic. However the ordinary ones such as tomatoes and potatoes are relatively cheap. The big competitor to Spanish fashion bowls in Europe is a delay.

Italian fashion polls have a different taste because of the volcanic soil. The vegetables grown in central Spain around Madrid on the other hand have the more exotic nature.

Why I do not eat Mexican vegetables

When you’re talking about Hispanic vegetables in America you’re really talking about vegetables from Mexico and Peurto Rico. The problem is I have greater trust in Spanish agriculture than I do in Mexican farming. Not that there’s anything wrong with Mexico, rather a large American food companies get their hands in the corporate farming in Mexico and I question the level of pesticides and chemicals they use in the food. In contrast in Spain I think it’s more natural as the EU has tighter regulations on produce.

If anyone has any more information to convey about Hispanic vegetables please let me know, I want to build this post up a little more.

Family life in Spanish speaking countries including America

Family life in Spanish countries is very important. I knew this girls from Columbia, South America, her family moved to the city she was attended university. The parents were all about the kids. They did everything together, they joined the same gym, worked out. The family was a nice balanced normal family.

On the other hand, one issues with Hispanic families is they still have a high rate of teenage pregnancy. I do not know if it is a real problem, just a different culture. However, if teens get pregnant before they finish school this can perpetuate a cycle of less economic opportunities.

Anyway, Let me know if you can think of anyway to improve my learn Spanish site or Spanish family vocabulary words. Thank you.

Swear words in Spanish

This post will tell you how to use Spanish swear words and why people use them (it is not for the reason you think). At the end, I will give you a nice clean, uncluttered printable list of Spanish swear words. However, this list is PG rated list of words, that means, it has no really, horrible bad Spanish language words. They are more dirty words than cuss words. However, if you use them ways to use in a creative way that could be a little bad. Therefore it is different than every other list you see as it is how to swear with class.

Most sites just give you a vulgar list of Spanish words online. However, there is often too much noise on websites and the list are not the most important words, but just plain rude. You will not get anything disgusting from this website. I give you well chosen phrases you can pull out and offend someone, but not too much, maybe a couple are offensive slightly but most are rather funny. I will first write about swearing and then maybe give you a Latino swearing list of phrases . However, read my post first as its interesting and will enrich your understanding of the language.

I do not curse myself and do not recommend anyone should. Then why the heck and I writing this post? Read on.

Freudian reason for why people swear

People swear the things they are repressing. For example, if they have no respect for religion but unconsciously desire to have spiritual fulfillment they take the Lords name in vain, I would call this literally a curse.

An example of this repression is I have notice Swiss, who are very clean people use bathroom type swears a lot, like a piece of…

The problem is almost nothing is sacred anymore and all the boundaries have been violated. Therefore, what is the point.

Swearing in European and American culture

When I was growing up in America, I was taught not to use foul language. In the old days I think they use to wash kids mouths out with natural soap or lemon juice or give them stinky cod liver oil. It was that simple. However, naturally I herd these words in school and made a quick association. That is I noticed the kids that were swearing were the children with strange behavior. Either they related to others in an aggressive way, or were unhappy or were not as bright as others.

Therefore, without being told I came to associate swearing with people with low self confidence. This is the main reason, however, below I have detailed some other reason.

Why you might swear in Spanish

I personally liked euphemisms and substitute words and expressions like ‘oh fudge’ or ‘to heck with you’. The are funny but express the point and best of all mostly innocent.

Why people swear in Latino

Shock value and attention getting. However, this in my mind is lack of creativity, as this means they do not have enough brain power to get attention in a more cavalier way.

Some people use them like others use commas, it is habit and a way to join two ideas in a sentence.

To offend someone, insults in Spanish. I think by using inappropriate language it will only bring you down to their level. Always take the higher ground, because the person who loses their cool, loses.

It make them feel good and its fun. OK Sometimes, if it is not too crass.

In bed – I think people do this as a deviant behavior to heighten arousal. Some people believe this type of swearing is the highest form and the only acceptable form of swearing. After all In Dante’s Purgatory, lust was the closet circle to heaven as it was excessive or misdirected love. Well maybe that interpretation was culturally determined as it was written in a Latina country. If you swear in Spanish in the bedroom, maybe it is not that bad.

Types of dirty words in Spanish

Creative new swears – Can be funny if not too over the top.

Holy swears – for me who is someone how is faithful is the worst type of offense as it not only offends people, but is disrespect the One who gives all goodness in peace to their lives.

Naughty Spanish swears – Most acceptable bad language in the right context, but you could also be romantic and this might be a better solution.

Bathroom swears – Conjures up vulgar images I would not like in my imagination. Very primitive and people who use these are unconscious of it.

Insulting intelligence swears – If someone is not as smart as you teach him otherwise, that is to be smart or blame yourself for not having the brains to help him.

Spanish swear words

Here is my list of Spanish swear words and phrases. These are different than slang with very vulgar meaning, I do not want that on my site or to promote that, therefore I tried to keep the list clean. I hope you use this with tact and in the right measure. This list is great because it is all PG rated words. No really bad Spanish language, that is not obscene, but none the less, effective if use with emotion and gestures. Here is the list of downloadable Spanish swear words you can print, so you can just memorizes them and not have to fumble through a dictionary for a translation, the next time you want to insult some bloke on the street.

Why profanity is not a great way to start to learn the Spanish language

The reason is simple, if you swear in a language then people will get turned off and not help you is Hispanic swears fly out of your mouth. Your objective is to represent our English culture as positive to people from Madrid, Spain to Mexico city, Mexico to Lima or any other South American city. You will learn most of the other swear words in Spanish anyway.

Let me know if you know of any innocent Spanish bad words (I now its almost an oxymoron) and leave a comment please.

The Spanish word for Pomegrante is actually the same as in English. It is Pomegrante. The Spanish word for fruit is frutas. The purpose of this post is to tell you why Spanish pomegrantes are my favorite fruit and why they might be important to you, beyond learning that they have the same name ins Spanish and English.

Spanish pomegrante – my favorite fruit

The best fruit that comes from Spain are pomegranates. I am an American living in Europe, and one of the first things I noticed after I moved to Europe was the fruit comes from different places, of course. I had to locate different sources for fruit and even changed my diet a little as the foods that are common here in the EU are different.

I had to determine which countries had the best fruit for the quality and price. When I lived in the United States fruits came from California, Mexico, and South America. I felt the best quality fruit was from CA or locally.

However fruits in Europe come mostly from Spain. Which brings me to my favorite from Spain and that is the pomegranate .

Spanish pomegranate fruits are the cheapest

When in season pomegranates cost as little as twenty cents per pomegranate. In season however pomegranates can run as high as three or four dollars a pomegranate.

Spanish pomegrante fruit

You can get Pomegranates from Turkey or the Middle East, however, these pomegranates tend to be your premium pomegranate in terms of price. Therefore, I usually only buy Spanish pomegranates.

The Spanish pomegranates however are usually smaller than Turkish or Middle Eastern pomegranates. However I trust Spanish EU quality. I know that Spain is part of the EU and they abide by farming regulations. In addition Spanish farming as hires standards for cleanliness. A friend of mine got very sick from Middle Eastern fruit, perhaps it was the water. He has some parasite and lost a good 50 lbs before he fully recovered. Therefore, I trust Latina fruit more.

How the Spanish pomegranate became my favorite fruit

The pomegranate is an interesting fruit. My initial interest in the pomegranate was not from a pure taste standpoint, but rather because of the health benefits.

I do not want to repeat all the health benefits connected with pomegranates, You can find such claims all over the Internet. I think they have a very high level of antioxidants not normally found in other fruits. It is unlike any other fruit, the reason I know, read my story.

Rather I want to convey my personal experience with fresh homemade Hispanic pomegranate juice. That is these Asian apples from Spain really helped my headaches. For many years I had horrible head pain from a brain lesion that would no go away until I started to by accident drink Pomegranate juice from Israel. Next I discovered, the Ones from the fruits from the lands between Madrid and the mediterranean were cheaper than Israel. I drank and drank until my headaches were gone.

In fact, it was the only thing that helped my headaches after many years of trying it everything from natural to modern medicine. I think pomegranates not only had a natural painkiller like blueberries, they also have some healing properties. After drinking pomegranate juice for many years might headaches at almost all gone away, with out having to drink it all the time. I have even made pomegranate wine.

My Spanish Pomegranate fruit recipes

My pomegranate recipes are fairly simple. I drink pomegranate straight, or with orange or lemon, and sometimes I mixing with honey. I generally do not like sweet things but a little sugar added does not hurt as it can be a bitter fruit.

How did you do? Do this quiz until you get 100%, really. I am a big believer in memorization to learn a language.

Spanish months are almost just like English

The History of Spanish months

Note how the English and Spanish calender are almost the same, this is because the months all from Latin.

Enero – Spanish like in English both from classical the Latin language word januarius. This is a derivative from Janus who was a God with two faces that could see the future and the past. I think I would prefer to see the future myself.

Febrero – English and Spanish sahre a comon origin for thei month which is again from Latin. februarius mensis, which is the month of purification from Latin (perhaps a Sabine word). It certainly is cold enough for purity.

Marzo – Again a Latin, word which Spanish and English adopted. This is in honor of the God of war of course Mars.

Abril – From Latin aprilis; and from aprire which is like to bloom and open. I guess in the mediterrainian March showers brings May flowwers.

Mayo – A Spanish and English commonality from the Latin word maius. This word comes from Maia, the eldest of the Pleiades, daughter of Atlas and Pleione.

Junio – From the Latin goddes Juno, where the month was iuniu. Looks like a Latin case to me.

Julio – Remember Julius Caesar? well the Latins had iuliu. Also Jupiter. So Spanish and English use this month also.

Agosto – From the Roman emperor Octavian, hence Augustus.

Septiembre – is simply from the Latin number seven.

Octubre – Eigth Month from the Latin number.

Noviembre – The ninth month it was almost changed to exaperatorius.

Diciembre – Like ten in Latin.

So you see then that the months in Spanish as the months in English all came from the Romans. Even though Spanish is a Romance language and English is not, England was occupied by the Romans. Whereas Spanish is more a dialect and direvative of ancient Latin.

Let me know if I can add anything to this post as I am learning Spanish myself. I am putting these post together as I learn.

Spanish for good-bye

Spanish good-bye is adiós. However, the purpose of this post is not simply to tell you how to say good-bye in Spanish, it will explain different ways you can say this, both formally and informally and teach you the subtle differences in word usage.

I am an American living in Europe and I think it is very hard to feel the subtle word and phrases difference, and you can certainly not learn this in a dictionary or a phrase book, but rather it is games by just using the languages. I personally think falling in love is the best way to achieve this, but that does not happen too often, so your going to have to learn it the hard way, with practice.

I will also give you some etymology and in my opinion it helps you remember the words better. Last, I will give a small vocabulary quiz on the phrases you have learned. So here are some basic phrases you can use in Madrid to Mexico.

Spanish good-bye is adiós or chao

Informal good bye in Spanish

nos vemos – see you (friendly and informal Spanish good-bye).
chao – bye
hasta luego – see you later (hasta means until)
hasta ahora -in a bit
hasta mañana – until tomorrow
nos vemos – see you
me la pasé bien – I had a good time
que te vaya bien – have a good time
ya me despido – it is time to say good-bye
que te cuides – take care
me voy – I am leaving now. (see how leaving is like the word voyage in English).
nos divertimos mucho – it was fun
adiós – goodbye

Formal good bye in Spanish

Me dio mucho gusto conocerlo – it was nice to meet you (to man)
Me dio mucho gusto conocerla – it was nice to meet you (to a woman)
gracias por todo – thank you for everything
ya me despido – I need to say good-bye

Etymology of Latino good bye

I am a big fan of using etymology to learn Spanish. Why can this help you with the Hispanic? Because Spanish and English have a large commonality of vocabulary with a historical connection. When you can understand the why, then the what is easy. If you understand how a word is similar to English you make a connection to your native languages. This is a huge step in learning a language.

Adios is Spanish for good-bye. This literally means to (a) God (Dios). It is similar to Good-bye in English which means God be with ye. So if you want to say good bye in Spanish just say Adios amigios, which means bye friends.

If you say Ciao this is Good-bye in Italian I think this is universally known. However, you can say this in any in Latina also like chau. The Hispanic language like Italian is a derivative of the Latin language.

Vision or visual and sound like and is connected with vista in Spanish. Vista in Spanish means to see or sight. So another easy way to remember for Spanish good-bye is, as te terminator said Hasta la vista is until we see each other again.

Spanish word for legs

How do you say legs in Spanish? This Spanish language body part is las piernas.

Long Spanish legs

This post will discuss how to learn Spanish body parts, including Spanish legs and other phrases that use words connected to legs.

Teaching kids Spanish words like legs

I personally think learning body parts and words and vocabulary connected with this is a great way to start teaching kids the Spanish language or any language. Why? These are concrete nouns, which are easy for kids to relate to.

You can demonstrate these things like your head, shoulders, knees and toes and of course legs in Spanish. On the other hand, picture dictionaries are only flat abstract pictures. Children need real things to learn Spanish. Kids like dinosaurs because they are concrete and large. This is why starting with easy concrete large vocabulary like “Spanish legs” and other words are the best.

For example, I have a daughter and when I am sitting with her on the kitchen floor and my wife is cooking and there is no TV or computer or books at arms reach, I start teaching basic body parts. I ask her, ‘where is my leg’ or arm or head etc is. Next, I teach ‘your legs’ and ‘my legs’ or ‘mama’s legs’ etc. In fact, legs are one of the first things she learned. Next if you show your kids YouTube with videos about Spanish body parts such as Spanish legs and are proactive during this lesson you will make further connections. Ask them where are the legs in Spanish while they are watching a video.

Be a teacher. This means be proactive and do not just assume kids will learn to speak. They will of course but if you are proactive with teaching them either a foreign language or your native language then they will latter appreciate what you have done for them. Me I would love more kids to learn Spanish.

Long Spanish legs

Now most people looking for Spanish legs online are really looking for Spanish women with long Spanish legs and found my language site by accident. This is ok for me, as anything to get people interested in languages. I think to fall in love is the best way to learn a language.

Therefore, I will give something for these visitors. Below is a list of things that might be useful to guys who want to chat up some Spanish girls.

I live in Europe but I am an American and love Hispanic and Latin language and culture. I see many guys travel to exotic places not just to learn languages, but to meet their mate in Madrid, Spain or Bueous Aries, Argentina.

Spanish legs phrases with the words legs in them

You have beautiful legs – tiene hermosas piernas -also use this for Spanish legs you like – yo quito taco bell

What is on your leg? – ¿Qué tiene en la pierna

I like Spanish girls with long legs – Me gustan las chicas españolas con las piernas largas

Cover your legs before you go to church – Cubrir las piernas antes de ir a la iglesia

Get your hands off my beautiful long Spanish legs – Saca tus manos de mi bella piernas largas español

My legs are tired – Mis piernas están cansadas

Touch my leg -tocar mi pierna

I am not a native speaker so let me know about anything that could e changed. Also please let me know if you can think of anything to add to my Spanish legs post as I am trying to build quality but also fun resource for those who want to learn the Spanish language.

First day of the week in Spain and Mexico

The first day of the week in Spain is actually Monday, the first day of the week in Mexico, Puerto Rico and other Latin American or Hispanic areas is Sunday as it is in the US. For me when I moved to Europe this was confusing a bit. On one hand the Europeans and Spanish are correct, Monday is the first day of the week as we all go to work on this day. Yet on the other hand, Spain being a Catholic country, should see the last day as the day God rested, that is one Saturday and Sunday being the start of something new. But it does not really matter as each culture has a different day. Spanish weekdays are Monday though Friday, that is all you have to know.

Abbreviations for the days of the week in Spanish

Monday is Lu
Tuesday is Ma
Wednesday is Mx
Thursday is Ju
Friday is Vi
Saturday is Sab
Sunday is Dom

On a calendar it could also be:
Dom. as Domingo
Lun. as Lunes
Mar. as Martes
Mié. as Miércoles
Jue. as Jueves
Vie. as Viernes
Sáb. as Sábado

Last list of Spanish days of the week that is less common is single letter abbreviations:
D L M M J V S

This is useful if you are using any software like outlook or calendar with only abbreviations, maybe its more useful for than the actual vocabulary.

The above image is just for fun as it has the same title as this is a famous Spanish American post card.

I am trying to create a valuable resource to help people learn Spanish online for free bit by bit. I want to teach it in small lessons with out some great hardcore program, rather light and interesting lessons on vocabulary and language. If you have any ideas about the Spanish language or suggestions please let me know, including the days of the week in Spanish.

How do you say hello in Spanish is the purpose of this post. Why write a whole page on a simple greeting like hello?

Because there are many subtly different ways to greet people in the Spanish language, I will look at the basic phrases here and address more advanced greetings at another juncture.

No dictionary or translation can replace the human brain when it comes to speaking a language. To speak a language you need to memorize. Sorry but this is true. Many people have told me stories about a language genius they herd of just picking up a language because they have an ear for it. I teach languages. People speak Spanish or other languages because they study and do not give up.

Spanish words for hello are a great place to start with basic Spanish vocabulary. Once you the word for hello, everything is open after that.

Hello is hola in the Spanish language from Madrid to Mexico

I have traveled to a few Spanish speaking lands, Argentina, Uruguay, Pueto Rico, etc, and people are generally friendly. Basically, with the little Spanish I know I am not fooling anyone. By the way I dress and with my accent and limited vocabulary, they know, I am not a local. But you know what, I have found that people are generally friendly in the Latin world to foreigners. This can not be said about every place I have traveled. My limited knowledge of the language went a long way. So if you are going to travel to

Hispanic hello more formal

Buenos Dias – Good morning

Buenos Tardes – Good afternoon

Buenos noches – Good night

Obviously ‘Buenos’ means ‘good’ and ‘Dias’ means ‘days’, that is the plural of the word day.

Informal words for hi in Madrid, Spain or Mexico

Hola – Hello (Catalan it is the same)

Que pasa – What’s happening

¿aló? – In Latin America when

How Are You? – ¿Cómo está? / ¿Cómo estás?

A possible reply to this greeting is “not much” or ‘no mocho’.

My little daughter even knows these phrases as she watches a lot of music videos on Youtube and picks up a lot of vocabulary.

Greetings in the language

Although in some languages there is a strict division between a formal and an informal language, in the Spanish language, today (however, not twenty years ago), the formal and informal language is similar to English. For example in Spain or Mexico or in the USA in English, You would not say ‘hey man’ to your boss, or ‘good day’ to your buddy, but you could in some cases. I think The Latino language is relatively informal. However, in the Polish language for example, the division is much more clear.

History of hello

My personal view on the orgins of ‘hello’ is that like the word ‘bye’ (God be with ye), it is a contraction. Most of the indo-European languages have a word that parallels the Spanish word for hello. In other words, it is all very similar in most European countries, and this is not just because of proximity, but rather etymology.

Hello in Spanish

What is the origin of this greeting? You will not find this in any normal dictionary but speculation is,it is connected to the phrase roughly translated from ancient languages ‘whole be to you’. Another idea is from ‘who goes there’. I do not know what this is old Latin based or romantic languages, but think these could be the connection. Let me know if you know more ways to say hello in Spanish.

Spanish words fruit

Who would not want to learn Spanish fruit words? Spanish is an important language and fruit is good for you. So learning Spanish fruit words has to be great for you, right? The purpose of this post is to teach you some fruit words you can use in Spain or Latin America and talk generally about fruit and language learning. I hope you enjoy it and leave a comment.

Spanish fruit words

Health benefits of fruits

Fruit cleans your body, while vegetable rebuilds your cells. There are people who only live on fruits and even those who only live on fruits (fruitarians)that have already fallen (I guess they can survive as the fruit contains many small insects or bugs and this gives them some protein). If you want to live long eat less, not a restrictive fruit diet. In my mind this is crazy. But doing a fruit fast once in a while is good.

Spanish fruit

Further, fruits and extracts of fruits have things that protect your cells from free radical damage. The skin of fruit contains anti oxidants and flavonoids, such as grape skin and even grape seeds.

Its better than drinking wine.

There is a ‘theory of nature’s signatures’ which says red and blue fruits are good for the blood and veins as nature has left this clue for people to interpret. There is a whole school of thought about this that dates back to the ancient Greeks. What we know about grapes (Muscat grapes are the best) it shows us that there is a kernel of truth (pun intended) in a lot of ancient knowledge.

Spanish oranges

I live in Europe and most European fruit in the winter is from Spain. Like in America the fruit is from Mexico. However, I tend to think EU quality has higher quality, as they have restrictions on GMO and level of pesticides etc.

Mexican Fruit is usually from large commercial industrial farms. Since I live in Europe I pick most of my own fruit and make preserves for the winter.

Fruits found in Spain

In Spain there is found every type of fruit as Spain and around Madrid as a very mild climate. The growing season is great. The are getting a lot of EU money and the local farms and orchards are becoming even more productive with irrigation.

The sun makes fruit sweet. What I love is not Pomegranates are coming from Spain. These trees yield fruit only once every two years and the only source before was the Middle East. Now I can buy 1 pomegranate for about fifty cents in season.

The most common fruit is grapes and maybe peaches coming from Spain. Spanish oranges also but they grow better in a more tropical climate like Florida or Africa.

Spanish fruit word list

Word list of fruits for the Spanish language

Copy and paste this list into notepad or MS word and just print out this pure list. Fold it up and put it in your pocket and absorb the knowledge. Take it out several times a day. The way to learn Spanish fruit words is simply memorizes them. I teach and learn languages and there is no magic trick. To learn you have to memorizes words.

Fruits are easy to learn. They are concrete nouns and very colorful and appeal to the senses: smell, taste, feel, look. This makes learning them easier as it is multi sensory learning. Learn these words for fun.

I also have a Spanish flashcard series coming out. Verbs are the soul a a language, while learning concrete nouns are easy.

My Spanish flashcards will give you a sensory filled experience as they are hand drawn illustrations on real cards. Not some computer photo of an apple. But a beautiful image on a real card. Try my Spanish language flashcards.
